Week 26: The Power of Analogy & Post-16 Horizons

Week 26: The Power of Analogy & Post-16 Horizons

The Big Goal: Master the art of "making the invisible visible" through expert modeling and strategic mnemonics.

💡 The Pulse (CCF Focus)

Theme: How Teachers Teach (CCF4) & Professional Behaviours

As trainees move deeper into Phase 3: Embedding, the focus shifts from what is being taught to how pupils internalize complex processes. We are looking at the mechanics of memory and professional integration.

  • The Why: Experts often forget the "struggle" of learning a new concept. By using mnemonics and analogies, we provide pupils with a mental scaffold to store and recall information.
  • Weekly Target: Deliver a subject-specific mnemonic or analogy. Crucially, you must expose the "pitfall" of the technique—identifying where an analogy might break down—to ensure true conceptual clarity (CCF 4k).
  • Mentor Action (Focused Observation): Observe an experienced teacher "live modeling" to narrate their expert thought process (CCF 4i). Notice how they verbalize the questions pupils should be asking themselves.

The 3-Minute Takeaway: Crafting "Sticky" Memory

This week’s episode explores CCF 4j. We discuss why some analogies fail and how to co-construct "sticky" mnemonics with your trainee.

  • The Deliberate Practice: Spend 10 minutes of your mentor meeting sharing a "tried and tested" analogy from your subject. Together, look at the trainee's upcoming scheme of work and build a brand-new mnemonic or analogy for a difficult concept.

🎓 Training & Development

Central Training: The Post-16 Curriculum

This session bridges the gap between main school teaching and the unique demands of Key Stage 5.

  • The Landing: Led by Jason Darvall (Head of Sixth Form, Lord Grey), trainees will explore the Gatsby Benchmarks, the UCAS process, and the specific safeguarding nuances of working with young adults.
  • Reflective Task: How does teaching Post-16 differ from your main school experience so far? Discuss the role of the Sixth Form tutor with your mentor.

🧠 Expert Corner

Pro-Tips: Navigating the Sixth Form (Jason Darvall)

  • Tip 1: Model the "Expert Scholar." Post-16 pupils need to see how a subject specialist reads and critiques academic texts. Don't just give them the info; show them how you process it.
  • Tip 2: The "Wider Life" Contribution. Professional behavior (TS8) includes supporting the school's vision. Engaging with Post-16 extra-curriculars is a fantastic way to demonstrate this.

A Note from Edwina

As we head into the Easter break, I want to thank you all for your incredible commitment this term. Seeing the growth in our trainees is a testament to the high-quality mentoring you provide daily. Please use this break to completely switch off and recharge. We have a busy Term 3 ahead as we move to 80% timetables, so rest is the priority!

Wishing you all a very restful Easter break.
