Week 22: The SE2 Induction β Building Belonging
"A trainee who feels they belong is a trainee who is ready to learn."
The Mentor Bites Podcast: Week 22
This weeks Podcast is written and delivered by Ann:
Look with your mentor at the long-term plans for the new groups you will be teaching. Identify some of the key concepts from this plan that students need to learn. The mentor should share some common misconceptions from this topic/unit and then share strategies or resources to help tackle those misconceptions (3e).
Induction Week: Your Checklist
Itβs officially Week 22, and for most of you, this is the first week with your new trainee. Your primary goal is integration. Please ensure the following are completed by the end of the week:
-
Safety First: Complete the school-specific Safeguarding Training. -
Tech & Access: Provide all necessary logins and training for your school's data systems. -
The Data: Trainees need access to information to be able to complete Class Context Sheets with the SEND information for all groups they will be taking on. -
A Sense of Place: Ensure they have a dedicated desk/workspace. Small gestures make them feel like a valued member of the staffroom. -
The School 'Language': Induct them into your schoolβs specific normsβshared routines, specific behaviour vocabulary, and policy nuances.
Mentor Action Items
-
[ ] Review SE1 Progress: Read their Assessment Document from SE1 to inform you on their starting point.
-
[ ] Plan Observations: Schedule the trainee to observe their classes this week and meet the class teachers to discuss short, medium and long term plans and share expertise and knowledge of the students
-
[ ] Curriculum Access: Point them toward the Medium Term Plans and resources needed for their 40% load.
-
[ ] Identify their wellbeing free each week: when is most suitable for them to be able to be offsite to support their wellbeing?
Training & Development
Week 22: Training Status
No Central or Subject Training
As trainees begin their first full week at their SE2 placements, there is no central or subject-specific training scheduled for Week 22.
This is intentionalβwe want to provide trainees and mentors with the "headspace" to focus entirely on the induction process, building relationships within new departments, and establishing classroom routines.
In School Training: Weekly Focus: Intrinsic Motivation (ITTECCF 7p)
As trainees move into a new environment, they need to observe how your schoolβs culture fosters motivation.
-
The Concept: Moving pupils from needing extrinsic "carrots and sticks" to being intrinsically motivated.
-
Focused Observation: Have your trainee observe an established teacher. Ask them: "How does this teacher make students feel valued as individuals?"
-
Deliberate Practice: Help your trainee identify three students who seem unmotivated. Spend 10 minutes together scripting exactly what the trainee will say to them to show their contribution is valued. Use the Podcast to help you to use the Evidence Base to underpin this interaction in high quality research.
