Mentor Training
UA1 - The trainees will be beginning University Assignment 1. You have been sent a guide for mentors, The trainee will need to conduct an observation in week 8 or 9 (ie. next week or the week after) in order to meet the submission date of 20.11.26. The theories that the trainees will be referring to are at the back of the mentor handbook. There is a guide to these 2 theories to remind you .
Refer back to the week 7 update for further info.
Espresso Training is back! Traing you can engage with in the time it takes to drink a coffee. This week Ann is supporting with probing questions, and Edwina with guest speaker Della - on Wellbeing.
2. 🎯 Core Content Focus (Week 9)
CCF Learn How to Focus TS3:
c) Working with experienced colleagues to accumulate and refine a collection of powerful analogies, illustrations, examples, explanations and demonstrations.
m) Interleaving concrete and abstract examples, slowly withdrawing concrete examples and drawing attention to the underlying structure of problems.
3. 🔍 Focused Observation Theme
Arrange a lesson observation where you will see a powerful analogy, illustration, examples, explanation and/or demonstration. (3c)
4. 🛠️ Deliberate Practice Focus
Mentor to share an effective analogy/illustration from their subject. Together, trainee and mentor should plan to add an illustration or demonstration into an upcoming lesson that will help pupils to remember new learning and discuss whether this is concrete or abstract
Possible generic success criteria:
1.Analogy/Illustration Impact: Discuss why it worked - How did it bridge the gap between abstract concepts and pupils' prior knowledge? What potential misconceptions did it prevent? How did it support long-term memory retrieval?
2. Isolate the core idea: Identify a specific complex or abstract concept pupils traditionally struggle to grasp or remember from an upcoming lesson the trainee will deliver
3.Get the trainee to design the analogy/Illustration: Trainee to plan a concrete representation (e.g., physical model, everyday object analogy, visual diagram) to anchor the abstract rule or theory.
4. Identify Limits: Discuss the limitations of the analogy/model (i.e., where does the analogy break down?) so pupils are not left with new misconceptions.
5. Draft the Script/Action: Write out the exact wording or physical steps for presenting the illustration during the lesson. Ensure ‘Dual Coding’ / Visuals are planned for, then Check for Understanding (CFU). Trainee to practice the delivery of this with feedback from the mentor.
